Morocco: Inauguration of tramway line between Rabat and Salé
23 May 2011
The first section of the tramway in Morocco was inaugurated last Wednesday, in the presence of King Mohammed VI.
It will link the cities of Rabat and Salé. Forty four tramways, constructed by Alstom, will run on a network composed of two lines with a total length of 20 km and 31 stations.
The Rabat-Salé tramway company and the French public transport development company "Transdev" have entered into a contract to operate the network for a period of six years.
This project, which will have taken an investment of over 441 million dollars, will henceforth link the principal business centers in this region, and should thus stimulate its economic development.
"The entry into service of the Citadis tramway in Rabat illustrates the commitment of Alstom to its clients to enable them to implement the latest generation means of transport, accessible to all and acting as a structure for the development of these territories" said Paul Moneyron, Vice-President EMEA of Alstom, in a press release reported by the newspaper France-Moyen Orient.
